With joy and love, Namaste School of Yoga opened its doors in October 2014 and was excited to offer the first Yoga Teacher Training in the Shuswap area.

About Namaste School of Yoga

Yoga Alliance non-profit International organization, sets the standards, ethics, and code of conduct in the yoga industry. Our mission is to create a supportive, inclusive, non-competitive atmosphere in which yoga practitioners can learn and grow. The Namaste School of Yoga is    Registered Yoga School 200 (RYS 200).

Namaste School of Yoga is dedicated to a schedule that helps students learn and digest the many aspects of this course. For this reason, the course is taught over a 9-month span to help students learn and absorb the teaching fully. It’s only when having time to bring concepts into our lives to recall and teach others. According to a National Study of how students learn, it is best not to exceed 7 hours per day of content anymore, leading to an overloaded and decreased effectiveness of what one is learning.  Namaste School of Yoga intends to provide the best possible environment for students to grow and learn, so capping class to 7hrs per day and providing time between students to have a better ability to digest and remember what is being taught. About the Course: The 200-hour course intends to bridge the ancient wisdom of the 8 limbs of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras with a modern understanding of anatomy and physiology. We will learn how to honour the Union of Mind, Body & Spirit. Students will practice and learn the general principles of the 8 limbs of yoga. A detailed study of the History of yoga and the history of yoga from the east to the west. The philosophy of the Yoga Sutra’s of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita will be studied. We will start exploring the 8limbs of yoga with the 1st limb, Yama’s (5 moral restraints), and Niyamas 2nd limb (5 observances) and how they apply to the practice. Through class discussion, demonstrations will learn about the 3rd limb of yoga, the Asanas(postures).  Students will practice and learn the general principles, benefits, alignment, assists, and the effects of the postures on the physical/emotional/and energy body. Students will be able to adjust and modify postures through the use of props and posture modifications. Students will explore the art of sequencing and study the anatomy of the major body systems, and the effects the Asanas have on the mind, body, and spirit.

Students will also learn about Pranayama ( the science of breathing), the 4th limb of yoga. They will understand the anatomy of breathing and the healing potential of breathwork. Students will explore techniques in Pranayamas and how to blend this into their own practice and a class setting. Students will also learn and practice the techniques and principles of Pratyahara 5th limb (withdraw of the senses), Dharana 6th limb (concentration), Dhyana 7th limb(meditation), and Samadhi 8th limb(self-realization).  They will practice and learn techniques and variations in yoga postures, withdrawal of their senses, concentration, meditation, spirituality, and understanding of the mind/body/spirit connection. Students will learn about the subtle energy such as the 5 sheaths, prana, banda’s, chakras, Guna’s, Dosha’s and Nadi’s and how they affect us emotionally, energetically, and physically.

Students will also learn the skills to become effective yoga teachers—techniques such as understanding the purpose of having your own practice and the power of intention. Students will have the ability to understand communication styles and how students learn. Students will be inspired to bring all aspects of yoga into a classroom. They will also learn the lifestyles and ethics of Yoga Teachers. And through their own practicum, students will practise being in the seat of a lead instructor in a class. They will practice preparing class lessons, teaching, hands-on assists leading all other aspects of a yoga class with confidence, flow, and grace and teaching their own class.

The 200 hours will be divided between developing a personal practice, alignment of postures, yoga techniques, teaching methodology, anatomy, physiology, yoga philosophy, lifestyles, ethics for teachers, practicum, homework, and the business of yoga. There will be a contact and non-contact hours aspect of the course; students will be required to work on the assigned reading of the yoga sutra’s, homework papers and personal practice in and outside of class.

Students who complete the 200-hour training will be presented with a ‘YOGA TEACHERS TRAINING CERTIFICATE’ at the 200-hour level and can register this certification with Yoga Alliance to become an RYT 200 registered yoga teacher.

The New School program starts in 2022

The program will run one weekend a month, with May having two weekends (one being a practicum).

The 200hr Yoga Teaching Training was one of the best experiences I could have had and one of the best things I did for myself. Throughout the course, I learned about the anatomy of the human body and what happens to it when you engage in asana practice. I found that through the 9-month course you not only learn about working with other people’s bodies but your own: you learn your own strengths and weaknesses. I went into this course quite new to yoga and valued just as much from the course as someone who had been doing it for many years. What I took away from the training is the core knowledge of asana, meditation, chanting, chakras, and so much more. The Yoga Teacher Training course provided me with a solid foundation of yoga that I can build on. I came into the Teacher Training program at Namaste Yoga and Wellness Centre blindly stumbling to find my way inward. I was a struggling young artist, a newly single mother of two, and feeling lost amongst a sea of changes. I had spent my days striving toward the goals of those around me, always feeling like something was missing. I wanted to do something with my life that meant something. I wanted to heal my mind, body; find my soul’s purpose. This Yoga Teacher Training and guidance I received was like a permission slip to be who I really was. It has to lead me, in under a year, to believe in myself again. To gain the skills and confidence to teach from my experience and to be a better human being. Since graduating, I have started my own Yoga and Art Studio (Curriebird Studio in Armstrong BC) and, more importantly, a dialogue within my community about well-being, healing and discovery.

Nancy’s approach to education in yoga is challenging; ask you to take a deeper look inside of yourself. Facing personal truths, forgiving and healing. Asking you to come fully into your body with discipline and awareness. With that level of self-knowledge and exploration comes a strong foundation in gratitude and self-love—the seeds to foster a strong personal practice in self-celebration and compassion. Throughout the 9 months, she provides one with a wide understanding of the benefits of yoga practice and the tools to express it teaching authentically. Her focus lies in tradition, safety and her personal love of yoga. I am ever grateful for the lessons I have learned, the friendships I have gained and the healing I underwent during those nine months. Nancy held the space for me to understand what I already knew inside. That I’m enough, that my personal story is important and that I have something to give. By sharing my truth through the practice of yoga, I automatically liberate others to do the same. Reminding them how amazing they are. Just as this training reminded me.

I chose Namaste School of Yoga teacher training for a number of reasons. I loved the idea of doing training for over 9 months. That would fit in well with my work and life. I also knew Nancy to be a deeply spiritual person and a fantastic yoga teacher, so that had huge appeal! And I love the community of Salmon Arm (I lived about 1- 1/2 hours away), But I do have a confession to make, I didn’t actually take this course to be a yoga teacher. I wanted to further my understanding of yoga, both through the spiritual lens and the physical lens. And I had a huge transition coming up that I wanted to greet with open arms and an open heart that would enable me to extricate myself from a 27-year career. Yes, I was retiring. To reframe the idea of retirement, I have now thought that I am creating space to do something different in my life and that “different” now includes teaching yoga. It was not that long into the course that I determined that it was my path to pursue. Go figure! So that is my little personal blurb, and by sharing this, I hope that it will encourage us in the fall or winter of our lives to seek out a yoga teacher training course, either for personal growth or as a teacher. I took the Yoga Teacher Training course to deepen my personal practice and get a sense of accomplishment.  I enjoyed the journey along the way; I learned way more than I expected to and enjoyed the group of like-minded people.
